Untouchable? - India
22 min.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5JkfYcxiQ8

A good film discussing the poverty trap in India: the dalits. We will soon start to think about the environmental inequalities, and family inequalities, and inter-generational poverty and inequalities. The dalits will serve as a good example, because it is so extreme. We move from global situations of stratification, back to state and cultural based stratification. How does a state's politics maintain inequalities or seek to demote them? On the one hand, there is the maintenance of inequalities by state politics: 200 million people in India want to get out of the dalit/untouchable caste situation, though few have any institutional means to do so. And even under a democratic system, upper castes run the country and have repressively demoted any self-organized dalit parties (death and violence shown in the later minutes of the film, so watch it with my warnings.)

As we finish looking at global stratification with the Bottom Billion conception, then we look at national levels of stratification and mechanisms of social reproduction or social mobility within them.

State policies, civil society, and institutional varieties can attempts to remove (or at least alter) the frameworks of stratification: here we have [1] education and [2] the welfare state frameworks and their institutional and policy differences worldwide. This is both Sernau and Esping-Andersen (The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism (1990). I hope to get to that next week.

To prepare for class this next week, look over Sernau Chapters 9,10,11. There is a mistake in the syllabus the section on "Advanced Poverty Programs" is in Chapter 11 (not in Chapter 10 as the syllabus says).

    2. Different yardstick for 2 rapists

    3. Two different men were suspected of having raped the same woman at the motel, but they got a different punishment. One man is an ex-director of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, identified as Park who raped his colleague. Another man is the owner of the motel, identified as Kwon. The court said that a warrant was only issued to Kwon as he had a responsibility of protecting the visitors as Kwon is the owner of the motel. For Park, the court gave a ridiculous response to the public. The court said Park was unlikely to flee or destroy the evidence after raping his colleague. In addition, the court said Park confessed to the crime and promised to try his best to compensate the victim. Who knows? Raping somebody is already a big crime to deal with in our society. It is officially illegal thing to be done. However, the decisions being made at the court for this issue brought a serious conflict as they discriminated one from another. A warranty had to be issued to both of them who raped the woman. By removing these hidden authorities, there can be a reduction of conflict and inequality in our society.
    -------------------
4.Prosecutors said in requesting the warrant that Park might harm the colleague. But the court said, “Park has already been dismissed from his post, so he is unlikely to obtain unfair treatment by taking advantage of his position.”

    2. Aging problem and aged workers.
    3. This article is about the number of employed people over 50 has exceeded for the first time. This kind of phenomenon is happening because of the democratic changes in the country like low birth rate and aging society. It’s true that world’s population overall will increase by roughly one-third over the next 40 years according to the U.N. But this will be a very different kind of the population growth than ever before. It is driven not by birth rates but primarily by an increase in the number of the elderly people. One reason for this is that in 1960s and 1070s, much of the developing world experienced a baby boom, as these baby boomers age they created the population explosion of seniors. This means eventually the last echoes of the global baby boomers will fade away. The , because of the continuing fall in birth rate, human will face the very real prospect that our number will fall as fast and the outlook will be even worse for Asia.
    -------------------------------------
    4. The increase was attributed to demographic changes in the country, where the low birthrate and aging population have been getting worse. Because youths now make up a smaller portion of the total population, older people now represent a bigger part of the job market.
The April figure accounts for 33 percent of the total workforce in the country, 24.3 million. Among the group, people in their fifties appeared most employable, with 5.08 million people of that age working as of April. It is an increase of more than 1.25 million from five years ago, and much higher than the 408,000 people in their sixties currently working.

2.The noisy lead by a young pioneer with 5 lines
3.Recently, the stories about a young pioneer with 5 lines (lines means the class of students` leader in China, more lines means higher class for young pioneers; Besides, for common conditions, the lines of young pioneers are at most 4), who is 12 years old, the general captain of young pioneers in Wu Han city and achieved many awards such as “National Outstanding Youth” ”One of Tenth Filial Piety in Wu Han Province” are very popular in China. The blog of the young boys, which includes of his photos with 5 lines and his papers about politics are famous rapidly.

4.The background of the young boy can also be called legend. He is not a boy who can achieve high marks every exams, but very popular among students and teachers because he is very kindly, helpful, diligent, especially caring about politics. The young boy paid more attention about the politics under the influence of his father, listening CCTV news at 7 o`clock every night since 2 years old, reading China Daily since 7 years old. He also published hundreds of articles and donated the 3000RMB royalties to the weakness. Yes, from the point of traditional education, he is an excellent boy; however, the big famous of such a young boy also lead to a heat debate about the basic education of home and school in all of the society.
    -------------------

5.On one hand, some people supported that he is a kind boy, and it is not a fault of caring about politics. Every child has his freedom to choose what they want, even though the politics, and the politics can also become the interests of little boy.
6.One the other hand, there exist more arguments about the case. First of all, the parents and the school pay too much about the students` leader and they always think that the children who can lead something can be more excellent. In fact, it`s an idea of “official standard”, which is bad for the development of children`s personality, making the students` institution more official. Secondly, it is against the normal education discipline of children, making the young boy become much more mature, which is beyond his age, and it is a failure of home education and school education. What is more, they claim that we need talent child in the world, but we prefer to see the happily growth of young child. It is a problem of the society, it is a problem of education system, it is also need us to reflect.
    7. In my opinion, what we should is not blame the little boy or his parent, but reflect the deep problem of our society. We should ask some questions: why there are so many classes even in young pioneer? Why the adults always stress their willing to the little children? Why the people of the whole society compete so fierce to become the “official”? Although it is only a personal case, we also need to see something depth from it!

    2. The Collapse of Detroit...Only Detroit?
    3. Last class we saw a video clip on 'the collapse of Detroit'. In this article it talks about Detroit as well as Chicago. The total population of america is rising, but certain cities are falling. Yet, this is not something that only comes under in America, it's necessary to view Korea especially inside Seoul. Seoul itself is improving but difference exists in the districts. Parents with kids try to move where they have better schools. These days there are many 'back to the farm' movements. If this goes on and the parents keep moving to the districts with well knowned schools some of the districts in Seoul may turn out like Detroit. The results may not be that dramatic as Chicago and Detroit but we can't ignore it.
    --------------
    4. *It’s an unprecedented collapse of a major American city. It’s not as if the population was dropping nationwide; it’s going up. Just not in Detroit. Its closest “outmigration” rival is Chicago, a five-hour drive to the west, which has lost about 964,000 people since 1950 but still holds about 2.7 million people, down 25 percent from its peak of 3.62 million in 1950.
*Detroit has played a significant role in my life. I worked there for a decade, nearly a third of my career as a journalist. My two sons were born there. I endured 18 months on a picket line during the newspaper strike that began in July 1995. And I keep getting drawn back. I was there most recently in January for three weeks researching a book I’m writing on the history of Detroit, trying to explain to outsiders how it got to be in the mess it’s in.
*Racism plays a significant role too. Detroit’s white flight exploded in the 1950s and ‘60s, after courts struck down local and federal policies that had allowed segregated housing. That was followed by middle-class flight on the part of blacks and whites as crime endemic to high-poverty, high-unemployment neighborhoods began spreading.

    2. Racism
    3. - Cyberspace tainted with racist postings

To maintain the country’s reputation for state-of-the-art Internet infrastructure, the Seoul government needs to make more efforts to ameliorate “online manners,” the 36-year-old Myanmarese said.

According to research done last October by the state human rights watchdog, there were many online disparaging postings. Some baselessly associated those from the Middle East with terrorists while others claimed those from Southeastern Asian nations looked like drug dealers.

“Such messages remain as part of history, contributing to the establishment of the country’s image. Those who understand Korean may feel disheartened by the messages,”

“To become an advanced country in the material sense, you only have to earn much money. However, to be an advanced state in terms of mental qualities, there needs to be education to help people refrain (from posting such messages).”

The National Human Rights Commission has also conveyed its opinion to the Korea Internet Self-governance Organization that it should strive to block the online distribution of discriminatory expressions. The KISO is an entity launched in 2009 by seven major Internet portals to deal with slanderous postings.

“We carried out research on such messages last year and realized they were as serious as we thought they would be. As the ripple effect on the Internet is great and runs long, we thought we need to take policy measures to address this problem,” said Park Sung-nam, chief of the NHRC team handling human right issues for migrants.

The number of foreign residents here, including short-term sojourners, has steadily increased.

The figure, which stood at 566,835 in 2001, increased to 1,066,273 in 2007, 1,168,477 in 2009 and 1,261,415 last year, according to the Korea Immigration Service. As of March 31, it stands at 1,308,743.

    4. This article is about the racism in the internet. Internet manner-Netiquette has more emphasize recently because of anonymity and cultural pluralism for internet culture. In the past, many Korea migrant laborer had been treated discriminatingly
for foreigner. (for exmaple a german novelist said, " Germany want to arrive workforce, not workforce but human.")They were treated thieves for occupation, fought many prejudice in racism. Korea Internet network has been developing more and more. But in a view for Internet manner , there is doubt about it.Now is the right time to self-reflection.

    2. 6-year-old who eats as much as her village!
    3. Suman Khatun is believed to be one of the world's fattest kids - and eats enough food each week to feed her entire village. The worryingly obese child gorges on enough food to feed an average family of four - and still complains of hunger to her despairing parents. 'It's time the parents took the situation seriously. If she continues to eat the way she does, she might die of a cardiac arrest in the very near future. It's a worrying time.' But it seems Suman's parents have no idea how to control their daughter.
    ---------------------------------------------
    4. It is sad because it is one of the vicious cycles of poor countries. The poorer people get fat, ugly, and unhealthy because they eat bad food and they don’t have any knowledge about well-being while the rich people become healthier and look good because of a healthy diet. The girl in the article sounds like she has Prader-Willi syndrome which is a syndrome that makes a person cannot stop eating that usually occurs in poor countries. It cannot be cured perfectly, and even if it could be cured perfectly, she cannot be cured because her family cannot afford to pay the proper medical treatment. It is unfair for her because she didn’t choose to suffer from Prader-Willi Syndrome but she can’t help stop eating. People with this syndrome usually end up eating themselves to death. The girl didn’t choose to be in a poor family, so I think she deserves the proper treatment like others. Also, I think her parents need help too since they think her crying and having a nosebleed is better than ending up dead because of overeating. Maybe they are not educated enough to see the bigger picture. I think both their parents and the kid need help.

2.Lee, Sarkozy discuss G20, trade ties
3.When I read this article, I thought that the most important and powerful things in the world control the other parts. The G20 means the few developed countries in the world. These countries have the power to control the world and sometimes they can invade the other parts such as developing countries through democratic methods. For example, I consider that the trade is one of the invading method by developed countries to developing countries. Because they have more high-grade technology and resource to develop and improve their life style. This debate have been controversial between people in the world. But the one thing what is true that most of the people living in the developing countries are involved in the lower condition than few rich countries. That's one of the social stratification these day.
4.Korea, France renew commitment to G20 goals to reduce imbalances, energy price volatility : Who is the real beneficiary from this trade? everyone? I don't think that. Because it cannot be existed that all of the people can benefit from trade. If some people benefit from trade, some people have to lose from trade. This is the system making this world unfair.

    2. Irregular workers pay half regulars
    3. After reading this article, I wonder what is the standard to divide the difference between the regular and irregular workers. Just the attendance? or the efficiency?
I think that actually dividing the irregular and regular workers is too depending on the property in one's family power and the degree of education. That is, it is depending on the parent power. And it is sure that the lower wage than others can cause their children to live at the same life style as their parents. This is the recent vicious circle. So I consider that doing not pay irregular workers as half, but doing pay them like incentive system. For example, checking the attendance and conversation with their senior and professionals. it will be more efficient.
4.The gap was narrower among female workers and the more educated : This sentence sadly reflects what is the important factors to live in severe competitive world. Most people wanna improve their social status through education and it causes the inefficiency to use the resource such as people in the whole things. That is, our society makes us to live more compete and make a modern social stratification.

3.if i have not studied here in korea,i will not find that there are so many foreigners who marry korean husbands, and i will also find that their marriage life here are not happy yet.most of their korean husbands are some people who are economiclly poor ,or have some mental deasease.some of them are addicted to alcohol.beause of the condition of their korean husbands ,the foreign bride here are always the victims who are very diligent ,but at the same time are suffering the family violence and their life can not be insuranced by their family.at the same time ,the law in korea is still not sufficient enough to protect them.and there also have some dicrimination on the foreign wives in law which rules that it is lawful for the foreign wives to have the korean nationalities until two years after marriage and at that time they can gain some subsides from government as their daily life doesnot have a basic insurance.
