2.Another KAIST student takes his own life (Inequality-tuition fees and grades)
3.For the last four months of 2011, 4 students of KAIST have committed suicide. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is one of South Korea’s most reputable universities. Students of KAIST are the top 1% of South Korean students. To make students study even harder, KAIST has been running a controversial scholarship system, which imposes a higher tuition fee to those students who get poor grades. Students at KAIST said that this scholarship system has been creating so much pressure and competition between students, which eventually made 4 students to commit suicide. It is possible for schools to impose such rules to students for a better performance. However, this is bringing a serious inequality to students who are getting lower marks. KAIST needs to consider removing this hidden inequality within the school system, in order to be a truly advanced institute for students. By doing that, students will have a true motivation to work even harder.

2. Grave goods and sexual stratification--a third classification in ancient history for gender roles: the berdashe
3. What is interesting is that this article highlights the 'normal way' the material world is built into hierarchies by sexuality (long before large states), and it shows how this symbolism was adapted to people who failed to fit in dichotomous social gender hierarchy that were accepted.
Many smaller societies had an acceptable 'third gender' classification, called a 'berdashe': an androgynous figure that was actually of higher status than 'regular' gender roles. Would this be the burial of an old 'berdashe?' The article could have enlightened its readers to this phenomenon though it fails to do so.

1st homosexual caveman found in Czech Republic
Archaeologists have unearthed the 5,000-year-old remains of what they believe may have been the world's oldest known gay caveman [sic, as I said perhaps a 'berdashe' burial instead of talking about it in our modern term of homosexuality], the British Telegraph newspaper reported on its website, Thursday.
The male body ― said to date back to between 2900-2500 B.C. ― was discovered buried in a way normally reserved only for women of the Corded Ware culture in the Copper Age, the report said.
The skeleton was found in a Prague suburb in the Czech Republic with its head pointing eastwards and surrounded by domestic jugs, rituals only previously seen in female graves.
"From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake," said lead archaeologist Kamila Remisova Vesinova.
"Far more likely is that he was a man with a different sexual orientation, homosexual or transsexual," she added. ['berdashe']
According to Corded Ware culture which began in the late Stone Age and culminated in the Bronze Age, men were traditionally buried lying on their right side with their heads pointing towards the west, and women on their left sides with their heads pointing towards the east. Both sexes would be put into a crouching position, the newspaper said.
The men would be buried alongside weapons, hammers and flint knives as well as several portions of food and drink to accompany them to the other side.
Women would be buried with necklaces made from teeth, pets, and copper earrings, as well as jugs and an egg-shaped pot placed near the feet.
1. Park Soo Min 2. Middle-class is diminishing in society. 3. Income of middle-class households had been falling since 1997 and now proportion of middle classes are almost diminished very fast. This means that middle-class people are moved up to upper class or down. As middle-classes are diminished the gap between rich and poor become wider and deepen. This is a serious problem because middle-class is the supporters for the stability of society. If they are gone and diminished, the conflict between the gap rich and poor will cause very seriously and it will be very hard to combine a society into one. Also economy growth will become very slow because there are no general consumers who are spending money. In the article this kind of phenomenon were occurred by increase of single-person homes or the rapid technological advances and aging society are the main reason for shrinking middle class. ------------------ 4. Since the Asian financial crisis began in 1997, the income of middle-class households in Korea had been falling as a percentage of the country's total income, while the income gap continued to widen. But for the past two years under the Lee Myung-bak administration it has seen a marginal rebound. Statistics Korea said Tuesday that the disposable income of middle-class families accounted for 66.7 percent of all household income last year, up marginally from 66.2 percent in 2008 but down 3.4 percentage points compared to 70.1 percent in 2003. The decline of the middle class goes hand-in-hand with the widening gulf between the haves and have-nots, amply demonstrated by such metrics as the Gini coefficient and the interdecile ratio. 1. Yin Yashuo 2. The great debate of one fetal or two fetal 3. As we all know that China has the largest population in the world, and it also brought some serious problems to the development of economic and society. Recently, there are some people who are interested to ask me the questions about the Chinese population policy and the birth policy. Yes, these days there some debates about Chinese birth policy and population problems. First of all, I want to say something about the birth policy in China now. In 1978, Chinese government proposed the family planning policy, which advocated getting married late, bearing late, bearing less, bearing well. The government also advocated that one couple had one child, but under many circumstances, the family could have two children. In fact, the couples who were against the policy would be punished such as confiscation of property on last century. At that time, even many Chinese people cannot agree the policy or they just combat with the government. But nowadays, the policy change a lot, which don`t means that Chinese government give up the policy of controlling birth rate, but they allow more people have the second fetal. As far as I am concerned, most my relatives have two children in their family and there are no problems for this. ------------------- 4. On one hand, some people proposal that Chinese government should broaden the policy of second fetal. They say that there are some opposite effect on society since the publish of family planning policy in 1980s, such as the aging of population, especially the unbalance of gender proportion. As the survey showed, the gender rate of birth children is 120:100 in China in 2010, and some rural places even reached 200:100, which will cause a very bad influence on the stability of society. What`s more, they claim that it is against the development of the human beings and obey the human rights. Therefore, two fetal policy in China is vital and meaningful in the near future. 5. On the other hand, there are some individuals argue that we should persist carrying out the family planning policy because it is in accordance with Chinese condition and it can improve the happiness of Chinese people. Firstly, China is so large a country that we have so large population, shortage of resources, serious environmental problems, and it is very difficult for graduated students to get a good job. Secondly, with the development of economic, the cost of raising child is becoming higher and higher, and the parents cannot afford the high fees of raising children and educating children. Thirdly, recently, the awareness of Chinese people also changed a lot. More young people don`t want to have more children and they may advocate no child family because they think it is free and comfortable, though it is obey the traditional conscious. In a word, they still consider family planning policy is the best choice for China.
1. Park Jiyoung 2. Inequality is most extreme in wealth, not income 3. Wealth, not like other materials, accumulates over time. It is sad but helpless that wealthier people have more money to save than poorer people. I mention vicious cycle everytime I comment on this blog, but I believe social stratification and inequality is almost always based on vicious cycle. Even though inequality exists in income, there is even worse inequality in wealth, or in my thought, the latter creates the former. When a person is born in a rich family, it is obvious that he gets more opportunities to make more money than a person who’s born in a poor family. I believe opportunities are inversely proportionate to how much money a person owns. Is there any solution to end this vicious cycle? Unfortunately, I think there is nothing we can do because inequalities in wealth, income, and other materials have existed not only today but since the time the thing called ‘society’ existed. A new information I learned from this article is that Americans who earn higher money also have chance to pay better tax. In other words, they save EVEN MORE money due to their resources to help them reduce their taxes (related to capital gains and tax at a lower rate). It is very surprising how wealthier people get even wealthier and poorer people get even poorer everyday and everywhere in the world and how it never changes as time goes by. ------------------------------------- 4. But economic inequality isn’t just about how much you make — it’s about how much you have. … Wealth-related inequality has also been relatively stable over the last few decades, whereas income-related inequality has been growing since the ’70s. … But as I noted above, most of the attention paid to economic inequality pertains to what people are making each hour or each year, not what they already have stored up or what kind of cushion they have to fall back on. ------------------------------------- 5. http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/30/inequality-is-most-extreme-in-wealth-not-income/?scp=2&sq=inequality&st=cse
3. Biopower was a term coined by French philosopher Michel Foucault to refer to the practice of modern states and their regulation of their subjects through "an explosion of numerous and diverse techniques for achieving the subjugations of bodies and the control of populations." (From Wikipedia) This artcle is about tendency of heart disease. In my view, our contemporaries are taken a lots of suppression and risk everytime. This tendency will be internal evidence for biopower. People do work intensively, and most of them feel very fatigue. And it must be universal situation. At long last, it will be normal life style. And we accept this idea unquestioningly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working long hours? Watch out for your heart
People who regularly work long hours may be significantly increasing their risk of developing heart disease, the world's biggest killer, British scientists said Monday.
Researchers said a long-term study showed that working more than 11 hours a day increased the risk of heart disease by 67 percent, compared with working a standard 7 to 8 hours a day.
They said the findings suggest that information on working hours -- used alongside other factors like blood pressure, diabetes and smoking habits -- could help doctors work out a patient's risk of heart disease. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.Kang Kyung-Min 2.KAIST rocked by student suicides 3.This article is about recent suicides in KAIST. Why young genius students elect suicide is that they have been burdened by huge assignment and oppression of whole classes which are operated in English. The education is one of the important factors to switch their social status to higher. All of the people want to upgrade their status and as much as they want to do it, the competition of upgrading through education is more severe. I think that korea particularly is more severe than other countries. The positive competition cause good effects for everyone. I think, however, it's not possible to bring the effects especially in this society- capital society : person who has more properties can have more opportunities in every field. Considering ancient culture, at that time, the land is same tool as recent education. I mean, even though we called these day is democratic society, the opportunities which are distributed depending on one's properties cause inequality and make social stratification more seriously. ------------------------------------------------------- 4.If there are students who don't want to study, do not necessary in here : this is called by KAIST president Shu. But professor Morgan corigan(Geroge town university) criticize the novel by use of the word 'Kimchi'. "She said Shin's novel is 'Kimchi' smelled cheap melodrama." Everyone has their own idea and I accept her vituperate. But she didn't need to say 'Kimchi'. When I was doing the army service, US soldiers usually sarcastically say Kimchi smelled mother XXXX to my Rok inferiors. They even say Kimchi-GI to a korean-american soldier. And I always drop them and made them do some push-ups. If I were a NCO of that professor, I definitely smoke her until die. Usually Soldiers doesn't take college level education. Assault victims, both male and female, are typically young and low-ranking; they are targeted for their vulnerability. Often, in male-on-male cases, assailants go after those they assume are gay, even if they are not. “One of the reasons people commit sexual assault is to put people in their place, to drive them out,”

ReplyDelete2.
---------
1st homosexual caveman found in Czech Republic

ReplyDelete2.
------------------
The Korean economy has been vulnerable to outside shocks because large-sized exporters single-handedly carry the country. Accordingly, observers claimed that the nation needs to nurture more local demand by fostering more middle class families

ReplyDelete2. The great debate of one fetal or two fetal
-------------------

ReplyDelete2. Inequality is most extreme in wealth, not income
-------------------------------------

3. It easy to think that the female-on-female, male-on-male sexual assaults in the Army are caused because of homosexuality. However, this article tells us it is more likely to happen to show who is the boss, who is on the top. In other words the soldiers are getting bullied (that is well likely to influence their whole life) because of they are young, wasn't born in America, or low-ranking.
So far there hasn't been much help to those who have gone through these horrible nightmares. The U.S. has established a special unit, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, in 2005. Some criticize that it's taken such a long time and are far less effective than civilian laws. Yet, I hope the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office does help out those soldiers who are having a hard time.

3.This article is about recent suicides in KAIST.

4.If there are students who don't want to study, do not necessary in here : this is called by KAIST president Shu. He make KAIST the 21th ranked in the world. Honestly, these his minds also are one of the driving force to bring up genius young people. However, according to recent news, half of the KAIST students feel that president shu just use these rank for his faith. I think too. So we have to consider what is really good for students and korea university.
